58-year-old essential employee gets laid off 1 year before retiring, entire team quits out of loyalty, HR begs them to come back for double their original pay: 'I'll come back for 13 weeks'

A multibillion-dollar global corporation's attempt to save money backfired spectacularly when it laid off a seasoned buyer whose leadership was more important to their team than their jobs.

Life is just like that sometimes. You think you're on top and holding all the cards, but then, when everything is laid out, you realize you don't have the winning hand you thought you did. If this company had been paying attention and had stopped to pause during their efforts to cut staffing costs by 10%, they might have noticed just how important this seasoned employee is.

While I'm not sure exactly where that metaphor is going, you know how these decisions go with management: see box tick box… with intangibles that are actually quite important, going completely overlooked.

And, regardless of anything else you might see in the columns of a spreadsheet, there's something to be said for an employee's character and quality when their entire team is so loyal to them that they're willing to sacrifice their own jobs to make a point to management.

  • In an effort to save money, this company laid off its veteran 58-year-old worker, who was approaching retirement in a little over a year. The decision probably made sense on paper since they were the highest paid, but it completely forgot to account for the fact that they were the only ones in their department who had any historical knowledge of the organization, or really any knowledge at all. 

    Whether through actual loyalty or through the pressure of the work that they didn't know how to do, and now faced completing alone, the other two members of their team soon tendered their resignations too, leaving the clueless boss helpless and with no idea how to proceed. 

    The company was eventually forced to crawl back and ask the employee to return and straighten things out, an arrangement that would cost them more money than they had originally been trying to save. 

    Funny how that works out.

    I was a buyer for a multi billion dollar global company that owns many a tool brand among other things. Corporate sent out an edict that all locations needed to cut salary $ by 10%. Our location decided to lay off 3 of us salaried employees to achieve this.

    | worked that winter (what else is there to do?) Made a ton of $. I did spend my time documenting, I trained a woman to do the job. But she was asking the same questions the day I left as she was the first day of her 9 weeks of training!! I told them if you want to call me and ask questions we need to set up a consulting agreement. They wouldn't do it. And never called. Thank goodness.

    Side note. During my time back everytime my boss asked me a question about how something was done (yes I had to train him too as he realized how lacking he was in knowledge) ... I would preface my answer with "well before I was fired, we did... " it was hilarious to see the look on his face.

    eviltwinn2 A really similar thing happened to my mom but she retired a year or two early. Her previous place of employment called her back because they were struggling big without her. She loved it there so she went back for a year and half. She still occasionally consults. IDK if she made more or not going back but she had basically unlimited PTO and took off a lot more than she use too.

    18k_gold You did yourself wrong by only asking double. If you were an employee with benefits they were already paying out about double. 4x is the way to go but can't change the past. You still made out, good job. Happy retirement!
